Welcome to my website! My name is Charlie and I am PhD student in the Gonzalez Lab at UCSD. I am part of the Biomedical Sciences PhD Program.
I am broadly interested in the connection between the microbiome and human health. I am paticularly interested in applying metaproteomics to understand the relationship between the microbiome and response to checkpoint inhibitor therapies. I'm just starting to get started on my thesis work, but as I make progress I intend to add brief descriptions of my work and tutorials detailing how to do data analysis to this website. Before going to graduate school, I was a research associate at Kaleido Biosciences where I developed my passion for research and the drive to pursue a PhD. I am most generally interested in developing creative and practical solutions to fix problems and discover something new. I like to continuously learn and expand my field of expertise - I am always looking to expand my data science/bioinformatic skills in paticular. I believe that the methods of analyzing data that are traditionally taught to biologists are not adequate to deal with the increased volume and dimensionality of datasets that has come with advancing technology. I beleive that discovering something unknown about a biological system by analyzing data is the greatest part of being a scientist. You can check out a few publicly available projects in this area at my github.
Some other stuff about me...
I love to travel, and some of my favorite places that I have been to so far include:
I seem to have an appetite for unique adventures, ones that seem to require a lot of convincing to get my friends to join me on
I love long distance running, although I seem to be doing a lot less of that recently.
I enjoy skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, cycling, and a ton of other fun outdoor stuff.
